LQS 5 Supporting the Application of Foundational Knowledge about First Nations, Métis and Inuit "A leader supports the school community in acquiring and applying foundational knowledge about First Nations, Metis and Inuit for the benefit of all students"(Alberta Education, 2018, p.6).
My understandings that create Impact
Just ask people who they are, where they come from. Building relationships and getting to know people is more important than simply worrying about the appropriate term.
Get to know my students and families. Where do you come from?
It is my role to continue and strengthen all partnership with families, leaders and elders in order to support reconciliation.
Indigenous People are defined by two systems, one based on kinship and culture and the other in federal law and legislations enforced by the government. This is a role they are learning to navigate that is new to their culture and I need to keep this in mind at all times in my words, my actions and attitudes.
Relook at my district policy and procedures and identify any gaps that need addressing within Westminster and within myself as a leader.
My commitments as a leader
When working with discipline issues, remediation or special education concerns, to keep the Circle of Courage and the Four Pillars of the Creators Law as a context and discussion point when communicating and working with my students and families.
Use the experts at my district. Have them involved in curricular programming, and inclusive education planning.
Recommit the plan to have the students out on the land frequently with our Indigenous elementary leader as we had planned last year pre-COVID. We have the dedicated funds in our budget to commit to these experiences and activities.
Celebrate the fact our district now has a solid and committed team of Indigenous leaders that will work alongside our school. Always involve them at every opportunity.
Commit to seeking elders and honoring reciprocity protocols
Commit to scheduled times in our staff meeting or during professional learning (PL), in order to enhance understanding of Indigenous way of knowing and learning. Spend time going through the multitude of resources that would strengthen the Indigenous way of learning into our daily lessons.
Continue with the Circle of Courage Professional Learning in August. Working towards strengthening how to use it daily in our language and social, emotional approaches with students. Ensure that the Indigenous Elementary Leader is involved and attends the session.
