- LQS 6- Providing Instructional Leadership" A leader ensures that every student has access to quality teaching and optimum learning experiences" (Alberta Education, 2018, p.6).
“I have learned that engaging in “fearless conversations” must start, first and foremost, with a comprehension of where an individual teacher or Educational Assistant (EA) is on their own learning path and profession. Without seeking first to understand, it is easy to “miss the mark” on an opportunity to move forward together. When I engage in fearless conversations, I do not hesitate to share my own vulnerabilities; this has resulted in an increased openness to collaborate and forge a new path with the Westminster team.
Areas of Impact: - Working with teachers on report cards and how we assess and communicate growth. - EA evaluation and growth using generative dialogue - Mipi, F & P, C3 and Lens data to improve learning of students - Working with the Math lead teacher in leadership within the staff - Using our Assurance survey with teachers to develop our Assurance plan to create a shared vision for the school. - Within my LST role I work closely with many agencies and community members to provide supports, and opportunities for the students.
Areas of Understanding: The potential to considerably accelerate student growth comes from teachers more than parents. This is important as we don't have highly involved parents. With a school that has severe poverty and limited formal schooling, it important to realize that home life is not the largest impediment for my students in learning. The home areas that do impede learning are areas that we can influence; such as parent involvement and early intervention learning. Fighting for a full day program in Kindergarten is vital and continuing to get parents involved and within the school council are top priorities.
Collective Teacher efficacy is a big one for my school. I feel the context of my students creates some insecurity and self doubt in my teachers. Teachers need evidence provided to them from their leaders, that what they are doing is having an impact! They need leaders to recognize and let them know they are making a difference that they amazing at what they do.
